Fire Monitor System

A fire monitor is a high-capacity water or foam cannon used to protect large areas and high-hazard sites that ordinary sprinklers cannot cover effectively. Capable of projecting large volumes of water or foam over a considerable distance, monitors can be fixed, oscillating or remotely controlled, and they are used where a fire needs to be fought from a distance or across a wide open area. MEP designs, supplies and installs fire monitor systems for industrial, storage and marine applications across the UK.

How fire monitors work

A monitor is essentially a large, directable nozzle fed by a high-flow water or foam supply. It can be aimed at a fixed point, set to oscillate automatically across an area, or operated remotely from a safe location, which is valuable where it would be dangerous to send personnel close to a fire. Fed from the site’s fire water or foam system, monitors deliver a powerful, long-reach jet or spray that can cool structures, knock down flames and apply foam to burning liquids across a wide area.

Where fire monitors are used

Monitors are used to protect fuel and chemical storage tank farms, loading jetties and terminals, large warehouses and open industrial yards, and helidecks and other marine installations, as well as to provide cooling water to protect tanks and structures near a fire. They are often paired with foam systems for flammable liquid risks. We assess the layout and the hazard, position and size the monitors to give effective coverage, and integrate them with the site water or foam supply and controls.
