Pre Action Sprinkler Systems

A pre-action sprinkler system adds an extra layer of security for places where an accidental discharge of water would be especially damaging. The pipework stays dry, and water is only allowed in when a separate fire detection system confirms there is a genuine fire. This two-step arrangement makes an unwanted release very unlikely, which is why pre-action systems are favoured for data centres, archives and museums. MEP designs, supplies and installs pre-action sprinkler systems for water-sensitive environments across the UK.

How a pre-action system works

In normal conditions the sprinkler pipework is held empty by a pre-action valve. A separate detection system, using smoke or heat detectors, monitors the protected area. When it detects a fire it opens the pre-action valve and lets water into the pipes, so the system is then primed and ready. Water still only discharges from a sprinkler head once that head reaches its own operating temperature. Both events, detection and a head opening, are needed before any water reaches the room.

Where pre-action systems are used

Pre-action systems are chosen wherever the contents are highly sensitive to water: data centres and server rooms, telecoms facilities, archives, libraries, museums and galleries, and cold stores at risk of freezing. Single and double interlock arrangements offer different levels of protection against accidental discharge, and we select the configuration to match the risk. We integrate the detection, valve and sprinkler design into one coordinated system, and design to BS EN 12845 so it protects the building without putting the contents at needless risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

A sprinkler system that keeps its pipes dry and only admits water when a separate detection system confirms a fire, reducing the chance of accidental discharge.

To protect spaces where an accidental water release would be very costly, such as data centres, archives and museums.

A standard wet system has water in the pipes at all times. A pre-action system needs both a detector to operate and a sprinkler head to open before water is released.

They describe how many events must occur before water enters the pipes. Double interlock offers greater protection against accidental discharge and suits the most sensitive risks.
