Fire Rated Pressure Relief Vents, Protecting your Enclosures Structure

For a gaseous fire extinguishing system to operate, the enclosure boundary needs to be sealed to a certain degree to stop the discharged agent leaking into the surrounding area and therefore diluting the enclosures concentration. As the enclosure integrity is sealed up, discharging a quantity of gas into that enclosure puts stress on the enclosure walls.

The construction of the surrounding walls will determine the maximum force that can be exerted onto them without failure. The walls strength is either advised from the builder or more commonly estimated using experience and common materials, for example, 250 pascals for double skin plasterboard and 500 pascals for concrete and so forth. Once this strength has been calculated, vents will need to be installed into the enclosure to provide enough free vent area that the maximum strength is never exceeded.

As chemical systems do exercise positive and negative pressure due to the heat absorption and expansion, 2-way vents are required to provide free vent area in either direction.
