Lithium-ion Battery Fire Protection

Lithium-ion batteries store a great deal of energy in a small space, and when a cell fails it can enter thermal runaway, a self-sustaining reaction that generates intense heat, flammable gases and fire that is very hard to extinguish. Protecting lithium-ion batteries starts with detecting the earliest signs of trouble, before flames appear. As battery storage, EV charging and powered equipment become more common, this is a fast-growing area. MEP designs, supplies and installs lithium-ion battery fire detection and protection solutions across the UK.

How lithium-ion battery detection works

The key to protecting lithium-ion batteries is catching thermal runaway at its very start. Before a cell bursts into flame it typically vents flammable gases, so off-gas detection, which senses these vapours, can give warning far earlier than smoke or heat detection alone. A complete solution often layers several methods together: gas detection for the earliest warning, backed up by heat and smoke detection, so that a developing fault is caught as soon as possible and a response can be triggered before it escalates.

Where it is used and how it is protected

Lithium-ion detection is used wherever significant batteries are present: battery energy storage systems, EV charging and parking, data centre UPS rooms, warehouses storing or charging batteries, and manufacturing. Early detection is combined with the right response for the risk, which may include alarms, ventilation, power isolation and suppression or containment measures. We assess the installation and the way the batteries are used, then design a layered detection and protection strategy suited to the specific hazard the batteries present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because a failing cell can enter thermal runaway, producing intense heat, flammable gas and fire that is hard to put out. Early detection is essential to catch it before it escalates.

A self-sustaining reaction in a failing lithium-ion cell that rapidly generates heat and flammable gases, often leading to fire and spreading to nearby cells.

Detection that senses the flammable gases a lithium-ion cell vents before it catches fire, providing much earlier warning than smoke or heat alone.
