MEP Fire was appointed by OTDS to deliver the fire protection packages for a series of purpose-built E-House substation modules. The E-Houses were designed as integrated electrical buildings containing critical power distribution and control equipment, meaning the fire protection installation had to be closely coordinated with the wider electrical and mechanical fit-out. With space at a premium within each module, careful consideration was required around equipment positioning, suppression pipework routing, detection coverage and interfaces with the wider building systems.
Our scope included the installation of main and reserve FK-5-1-12 gas extinguishing systems, dedicated coincidence detection and alarm systems and addressable fire alarm systems. MEP Fire worked alongside the wider project team throughout the fit-out programme, coordinating the suppression and detection equipment around the electrical infrastructure and ensuring each element of the fire protection package could be incorporated effectively within the modular construction. The works required a combination of mechanical suppression installation, electrical fire systems installation and coordination of associated interfaces.
The project demonstrates MEP Fire’s ability to deliver coordinated multi-discipline fire protection packages within specialist modular and critical infrastructure environments. Working within an off-site manufacturing and fit-out programme also required a flexible approach to sequencing and close coordination with other trades to ensure the completed systems aligned with the wider E-House delivery programme. Following completion of the works, OTDS commented: “The job was completed on time and in a professional manner.”
