IG-100 Fire Suppression System

IG-100 is an inert gas fire suppression agent consisting of 100 percent nitrogen. As nitrogen already makes up around 78 percent of the air we breathe, IG-100 is completely natural, with zero ozone depletion potential, zero global warming potential and no residue on discharge. It suppresses fire by reducing the oxygen concentration in a protected room, making it a clean, environmentally sound choice for data centres, electrical rooms and other sensitive environments. MEP designs, supplies and installs IG-100 systems across the UK.

IG-100 composition and how it works

IG-100 is pure nitrogen. On discharge it lowers the oxygen level in the enclosure from around 21 percent to roughly 12 percent, suppressing the fire while staying within safe limits for occupants for the required hold time. Because nitrogen is slightly lighter than air, IG-100 mixes readily and distributes evenly through the room. It is stored as a high-pressure gas in cylinders located away from the protected area and delivered through fixed pipework and nozzles.

Where IG-100 is used

IG-100 protects high-value, sensitive spaces where a clean agent is essential: server and comms rooms, data centres, control and switch rooms, UPS and battery rooms, and archive storage. Its single-gas composition can simplify supply. IG-100 is also extremely effective in rooms with some level of leakage as it performs extremely well during the room integrity test and always creates a continuous mixing scenario. We assess the enclosure, calculate the required agent quantity, design the cylinder bank and pipework, and confirm performance with pressure relief venting and room integrity testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

IG-100 is a fire suppression agent made of 100 percent nitrogen. It extinguishes fire by reducing oxygen in the protected room and leaves no residue.

By displacing oxygen and lowering its concentration below the level that sustains combustion, while remaining safe to breathe for the short hold time when designed to BS EN 15004.

Yes. Nitrogen is a natural atmospheric gas, so IG-100 has zero ozone depletion, zero global warming potential and is unaffected by F-gas rules.

Being a single gas, it is simple to source and effective in leaky enclosures. Performance is comparable to other inert agents.

Yes, when correctly designed. The reduced oxygen level suppresses fire while staying within safe breathing limits with short exposure.
