IG-541, known by the trade name Inergen, is an inert gas fire suppression agent blended from three natural gases: nitrogen, argon and a small proportion of carbon dioxide. It extinguishes fire by reducing oxygen while remaining safe for occupants, with zero ozone depletion and zero global warming potential. The clean, residue-free discharge makes IG-541 well suited to data centres, control rooms and other spaces full of sensitive electronics. IG-541 is made up of approximately 52 percent nitrogen, 40 percent argon and 8 percent carbon dioxide. On discharge it lowers the oxygen level in the room enough to suppress fire. The small amount of CO2 is deliberate: it stimulates the body to breathe slightly deeper, helping occupants take in oxygen more efficiently in the reduced-oxygen atmosphere. Like all inert agents it reaches every corner of the enclosure and holds concentration for the required period.
IG-541 protects the same high-value risks as other inert agents, server and comms rooms, data halls, switch rooms, UPS and battery rooms, and archives, wherever a clean, environmentally sound agent is preferred over chemicals or water. The gas is stored in high-pressure cylinders sited away from the protected space. We calculate the agent quantity, design the pipework and nozzles, size the pressure relief venting and verify the enclosure with room integrity testing to ensure reliable performance.
